Introduction

In the global cosmetics industry, packaging is the most protected mode by which products can be transported and the most important link between brands and consumers. With its environmental friendliness, recyclability, and customizable properties, paper-based packaging is now favored by a large number of cosmetics brands.

For B-end buyers and purchasers, it is very important to be equipped with the appearance needs associated with paper-based packaging in order to ensure the quality and brand image of a product without risk to the supply chains. This paper will detail the overall appearance standards of paper-based cosmetics packaging, which will also provide practical reference for international procurement teams, complemented by industry-standard reference examples.

Paper-Based & Compatible Packaging Materials for Cosmetics

The Cosmetics packaging includes multiple materials, including various products that are made of paper-based, in most cases paper-based products are the ones that are the most versatile and eco-friendly. These paper-based packaging with packing or packaging materials such as cardboard, plastic, or composite bags are all standard combinations.

1.1 Bags

Paper bags designate themselves as the top in the category of aesthetic packaging for packaging of gifts and carry-on for retail, while composite bags (structured like the case: paper + plastic or aluminum foil) are used for products that need moisture resistance and barrier properties in powders, skin care masks, etc.

1.2 Boxes

They are used for covering paper-plastic composite boxes and plastic and metal. For cosmetics primary packaging, paper-based boxes like folding cartons and rigid boxes are the common materials, while metal and plastic boxes are generally employed for supporting packaging to improve product grade.

1.3 Outer Packaging

In fancy boxes, blister packs, middle boxes, and shipping cartons. Fancy boxes generally come in high-end cosmetics gift sets, focusing on both their decorative and texture; shipping cartons, secondary packaging, provide protective performance designed to ensure international transportation is safe.

Basic Material Safety Needs for Cosmetics Packaging

The primary threshold for cosmetics packaging is material safety before considering appearance. For international trade purposes, paper-based packaging materials must conform to the pertinent regional standards applicable to protect them against harmful environmental effects.

First, the materials must be non-toxic, safe, and non-hazardous materials free from heavy metals, formaldehyde, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which will not cause skin irritations, health hazards to consumers, etc.

Secondly, the compatibility of paper-based materials in direct contact with cosmetics and the proper transfer or transfer of harmful substances from one product to another, will also be of high quality with no safety risks involved.

Thirdly, in view of the rising focus of global green campaigns, consumers’ demand for renewable materials or recycled paper-based packages that not only comply with environmental regulations, but also are in alignment with the brand’s sustainable development strategy.

Aesthetic Standards & Appearance Control of Paper-Based Cosmetics Packaging

The appearance of the packaging will determine the market competitiveness of the product. The following key appearance conditions apply to various types of paper and are the subject of B-end procurement inspections:

3.1 Bags (Paper Bags & Composite Bags)

The surface of the bag should be flat and without any wrinkles, scratches/air bubbles to give a definite impression. The color of the bag should be the same, and there should not be a color difference.

Paper bags – fold linings should be clear and neat, and the edge trimming should be smooth, with no burrs. The bag’s sealing should be tight—no leakage, opening, or perforation of the liquid and cream should be observed.

For the single or composite bags, the laminating material should be firm, with the absence of any delamination or coating of any type for barrier function. The printing on the bag surface will match the design draft, clear from print; no fuzzy text or contorted patterns.

3.2 Boxes (Paper Boxes and Matching Boxes)

The surface of the box shall be smooth and straight. It shall have no visible scratches, burrs, or severe indentation, or damage to the bottom.

The tightness of the box opening shall be appropriate: when it comes to fancy boxes, it will not be forced open with fingers. For the proper standard, the bottom does not fall off when the cover edge is pinched.

If the box has a mirror or internal accessories on it, this mirror must be pasted firmly to the box and not move or tear any part of the product, so the inside is secured. It should not be loose or displaced. The box accessories on its interior are tightly matched with its external accessories to make sure that the product inside does not slip out.

3.3 Printing & Labeling

Printing & labeling are the basic building blocks of brand communication, and the quality of the mark directly influences the brand image. The printed lines, the text on the cosmetic packaging will remain clean, clear, and non-fading, and all the colors will be the same.

Standard printing methods for paper-based packaging, including offset printing, flexo printing, and digital printing, would make sure that the ink stays in place, without ink fading or smudging when touched.

No mislabeling, missing labeling or reverse labeling will be permitted; the label will be accurately pasted without warping or falling off.

Furthermore, the labeling content should be in accordance with the provisions set out in GB 5296.3 and in accordance with relevant international standards (for example, EU cosmetic labeling regulations), and the information should be clearly indicated so that products are in compliance with regulatory requirements.

3.4 Paper Cartons (Primary & Secondary)

Cartons shall be covered in the same consistency as the packaging, except that the cartons’ covering must be clean and straight, and the surface must not be bent or distorted. The box cover will be properly closed with no wrinkles, missing edges, or broken corners.

For bonded elements, the adhesion shall be robust (without bonding markings, cracking, or mutual adhesion). In the carton, products shall be free of mispacking, missing packing, or reverse packing.

Carton labels shall be clean and complete, indicating product name, specification, quantity per carton, and manufacturer’s name as required. On export cartons, other information like net weight, total carton weight (gross weight), volume, production date, shelf life or batch number and expiration date shall clearly be marked.

3.5 Shipping Cartons

As the outermost packaging for international transport shipping cartons, shipments shall be clean, straight, and smooth, but shall be in a clean, smooth state of packaging the cartons at their outer limit, and the carton sealed (adhesive tape or strapping shall be firm without loosening).

The items inside shall also be fixed to avoid collision and damage while the product is being transported. The shipping carton will have clear, complete,e and proper marks, correct positioning.

The graphic symbols specified on GB/T 191 (moisture-proof, shock-proof, and stacking limit) should be marked (according to need) to ensure correct handling in transportation and prevent damage to your goods.
